What Causes TMJ Disorders?
In most cases, TMJ disorders result from having a misaligned bite that doesn’t allow your upper and lower teeth to close properly. Misaligned teeth also don’t provide the adequate support needed for facial muscles to chew and swallow. Other causes include teeth grinding, arthritis, or jaw injury.
Dr. St. Matthew-Daniel may diagnose your TMJ with the use of a TENS unit, or “transcutaneous electrical neurostimulation” which delivers low-frequency electrical impulses to the jaw muscles. The jaw then relaxes into its natural, ideal position to help determine the most precise diagnosis of your TMJ dysfunction.
