Migraines & TMJ

Get Relief From Your Pain

TMJ, also known as TMD or temporomandibular joint dysfunction, is a chronic disorder characterized by pain in your jaw, neck, or face. When the jaw joint and the nerves surrounding the joint become inflamed, all the surrounding muscles in the head, neck, shoulder, back are also affected, causing pain in any or all of those areas. Dr. St. Matthew-Daniel has advanced training as a TMJ specialist and offers treatment for migraines and TMJ in Orlando, FL.

What Are the Symptoms of TMJ?

Patients experience a wide variety of symptoms that can be caused by having TMJ, including:

  • Headaches
  • Uncomfortable bite
  • Neck, shoulder, or back pain
  • Pain in the jaw joint and/or the ear
  • Jaw locks when open or closed
  • Clicking or popping in the jaw
  • Sensitive or sore teeth
  • Worn or cracked teeth
  • Restricted ability to open the mouth without pain

What Causes TMJ Disorders?

In most cases, TMJ disorders result from having a misaligned bite that doesn’t allow your upper and lower teeth to close properly. Misaligned teeth also don’t provide the adequate support needed for facial muscles to chew and swallow. Other causes include teeth grinding, arthritis, or jaw injury.

Dr. St. Matthew-Daniel may diagnose your TMJ with the use of a TENS unit, or “transcutaneous electrical neurostimulation” which delivers low-frequency electrical impulses to the jaw muscles. The jaw then relaxes into its natural, ideal position to help determine the most precise diagnosis of your TMJ dysfunction.

Treatment From Our TMJ Specialist

Dr. St. Matthew-Daniel will evaluate the severity of your symptoms and recommend a treatment plan. Often patients get relief from simple changes in lifestyle or by using a custom-fitted nightguard. While noninvasive methods to treat TMJ are always preferred, Dr. St. Matthew-Daniel will coordinate your care with a specialist if your particular condition needs more advanced treatment.

Our TMJ Specialist Treats Migraines With a Clinically Proven Device

The Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has recently approved a simple, safe device called the NTI Tension Suppression System as a drug-free alternative to help reduce migraine or headache pain experienced by millions of Americans. This unique plastic night guard is customized by Dr. St. Matthew-Daniel to fit over only your two upper front teeth. Research studies show that up to 88% of users reported a reduction in migraine-related events.
